Ayudamos a Sumi! Let's Help Sumi! Update

Fundraiser Update:

Most of you will remember Sumi. Last year her family suffered a terrible disaster: a fire broke out in their home and they lost everything.

We set out to help Sumi in every way possible and thanks to the immense kindness of so many of you we were able to raise enough money to begin piecing her house back together.

Since that awful day we've managed to replace or recover much of the vital supplies Sumi's family lost. From a refrigerator to clothing, beds, mattresses and food, we had a whole list of items the family were in desperate need of. Recently we were able to spend the remainder of the money raised on fixing the roof, rewiring the electrics of the house and more food for the family. THANK YOU to everyone involved in making this happen! We couldn't have done it without you!

Oh, and not to forget, a little of that money was able to contribute towards Sumi's school supplies and uniform for the new school term, as pictured above. We're so happy to see that smile again!

Fundraiser Update:

In June, our student Sumi and her family suffered a disaster beyond their control. They came home to find their house in flames as their neighbors attempted to fight the fire using buckets of water. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Sumi and her family lost everything.

Our hearts were broken for Sumi and her family. All of our volunteers wanted to help -- we decided to campaign to raise funds. Our goal was to provide the family with basic necessities such as clothing, a temporary living situation, mattresses, bed frames, bedding, kitchen items, furniture as well as labor and materials to help repair and other construction items.

Thanks to the help of many of you, we were able to raise $1660.00 USD -- we truly appreciate your generous support and cannot begin to thank you enough. We are thrilled to see the beautiful smile on Sumi's mother's face, in the photos below. Thanks again!

All funds raised have provided the following items:
Roof
Electrician
Stove and OLLAS, TERMO
Refrigerator
Paint for the interior of the house
Clothing
Beds
Mattresses
Bed frames
Blankets
Chest of drawers
Cash flow for groceries (comida)
Materials for the sewing machine

Ayudamos a Sumi! Let's Help Sumi!
One of our students, Sumi, and her family recently suffered a disaster beyond their control. They came home to find their house in flames as their neighbors attempted to fight the fire using buckets of water. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Sumi and her family lost everything.

This area of Huaraz does not have the infrastructure to respond to emergencies of this nature. It is also uncommon for families to have insurance for themselves, much less for their homes.

Sumi is in Primary School and maintains good attendance at Seeds of Hope. All of the items in Sumi's house were destroyed including her school supplies, her backpack, clothes, and infamous pink jacket. Sumi's mother was learning a new trade - she recently received a loan to purchase a sewing machine and was practicing new design stiches to make clothes as a method of income. You will see from the photos that her sewing machine was destroyed. (scroll down to see photos)

How can we help?
Seeds of Hope would like to help Sumi and her family move forward and rebuild their life. With your help, we hope to provide the family with basic necessities such as: Clothing, a temporary living situation, mattresses/bed frames/bedding, kitchen items, some furniture and labor for demolition/construction.

The first step for rebuilding will be to remove the roof, as it is due to collapse. From there, the interior will be gutted to start anew. We will track all progress and keep updates right here on our blog.

We are grateful for any help you can provide, even if it is spreading the word or keeping Sumi and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
