ART :: Stylized Adjectives :: Identifying Personal Strengths & Abilities

We continue to program creative art-related projects inspired by our ongoing Paso a Paso program at Seeds of Hope. These workshops are aimed to encourage the children to express their dreams, strengths and abilities through drawing, painting and other forms of mixed media.

An important aspect of this program is to provide an opportunity for the students to spend time in a creative space – producing a tangible work of art. There is a wave of calm that takes over when we exercise the creative side of our brain and a feeling of accomplishment when we are productive.

Our first workshop introduced the concept of collaging using images that represent an idea of who we hope to become. The second workshop focused on identifying multiple strengths and abilities to describe ourselves  encouraging the students to think positively about who they are internally and to recognize how that strength can translate at school or into a career a down the road.

From our previous collage workshop, we learned that the students have little experience when it comes to brainstorming. Therefore, we began the lesson with a concise brainstorming session to develop the skill of brainstorming and mapping out a plan prior to diving into any project.

Next, the students selected one word or adjective that they felt represented them the best. Then they transferred that word onto a sheet of paper, considering composition. Finally, they adorned each letter using colored pencils, markers, paint and small pieces of scrap paper to stylize their word.

These works of art are currently displayed in the Salon Verde near our 'Caja de suenos' wall - which features creative examples of the future aspirations of our primary students and highlights their strengths and abilities.
